My kousa dogwood ( which I have for fifteen years now) did not produce any leaves this year. Therefore, I did not get any flowers either. Do you know what may have caused this and if there is any hope for next year?

Unfortunately, based on your description it sounds as though your tree may be dead. I am not certain what might have happened to it, however any changes in environment such as a change in drainage around the tree or compacted soil around the tree, or physical damage such as damage to the roots by voles or nearby digging, or damage to the bark by rabbits, or damage to the trunk by some sort of accident might have caused this. It is also possible that the weather was a factor, with the very dry winter and spring causing it to die. It could also be delayed stress due to the droughts we have had in previous years, with the dry winter/spring being the straw that broke the camel's back. You might consult with your county extension and/or a professionally trained and certified arborist to see if they have any suggestions. I am sorry about your tree and wish I could be more encouraging.
