|When my columbine bloomed this spring the flowers stayed beneath the foliage and my daylilies are doing the same. They are both right beside each other and have both been there for two summers this being the third. Each spring I use a slow release fertilizer. I have not used anything high in nitrogen. This is the first time this has happened. I looked beneath the foliage on my columbine today and there are some new buds but they are white instead of blue. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong or what I should do? We also had a hail storm this year but I dont know if that would cause this.|
Very strange. For some reason the bloom stalks are not elongating naturally. It must be due to some weather related issues during part of their growth cycle or more likely to some slight damage from drift from a weed control product used nearby or perhaps a weed and feed fertilizer. I suspect they will be back to normal next year.
