| I have 12 green, 1.5-cuft urns on pedestals in full sun along a 150 foot wall in which I would like to plant drought resistant and/or low maintenance plants that look like scarlet pimpernel dipladenia, don't grow too big and really look good. Can you suggest what I might plant? |
| The only plant that looks like Scarlet Pimpernel is Brazilian Jasmine - Dipladenia splendens; which is Scarlet Pimpernel. Originally found in the hills above Rio de Janeiro, but apparently no longer found in its native habitat. Scarlet Pimpernel does well in tubs and hanging baskets; requires a sunny position, is not frost tolerant; needs well drained mulch or potting mix, with slow release fertiliser application in Spring and late Summer. It's important to keep the soil moist, but do not allow the plants to stand in water. These plants are not drought tolerant, but if this is the look you want, this might be your only choice. Salpiglossis (Velvet Trumpet Flower) is drought tolerant and boasts sprays of large, dark-purple trumpet flowers on bushy plants. Much admired as a container plant, it grows in full sun to part shade and reaches a height 12-18". Perhaps this will appeal to you. Best wishes with your garden! |
