| Planting is similar to what you would do for a container grown plant, but you have to remove the burlap and twine. First loosen the soil over an area two to three times wider than the rootball and about the same depth. Check the trunk of the tree to see where the soil was when it was growing in the field; you want to plant it at the same depth. Set the plant in the hole, when you are satisfied it is at the right depth, go ahead and remove the wrappings. (They may seem like old fashioned burlap and twine that would degrade over time, but most modern nurseries are using look-alike synthetics so it is highly recommended to remove them.) Backfill with the soil, firming it as you go. Then water slowly and deeply to settle any air pockets. Mulch over the disturbed area with a layer of organic mulch two to three inches deep. Water as needed to keep the soil slightly damp like a wrung out sponge (not saturated/sopping wet and not dried out) until it freezes this fall. This is especially important as you are planting in the height of summer which is a most stressful time for new plantings. Good luck with your spruce! |
