| I wanted to know if the Plum Passion Bamboo plant will spread from it's original spot like some other bamboos, or will it just stay at the 3' wide area where originally planted? |
| Nandina domestica, or heavenly bamboo, is not really a bamboo but is so named because the stems look a little like the canes of bamboo. Nandina won't run the way bamboo does, but its nature is to produce new shoots from the roots so eventually your plant will become a cluster of stems. Nandina does tend to colonize an area. You can keep it within bounds by cutting off some of the new shoots as they appear or by doing some root pruning as it matures. Simply place the blade of your shovel in the soil and slice straight down in a circle all around the plant. This will sever some of the roots that are venturing out too far from the main root mass and will effectively keep your nandina within bounds. Best wishes with your landscape! |
