| I purchased 2 pony tail ferns from a local nursery. I see that they will not be able to tolerate a Wisconsin winter so my plan is to bring them in doors this winter. What is the best way to winter these plants? Will they shed their needles? Should I keep them under grow lights? Hopefully, you will send me info to best keep these plants so I can take out doors next year. Thank you. |
| Ponytail fern is Asparagus densiflorus and it can be successfully grown indoors during the winter months. This plant likes moist (but not soggy) soils and will grow indoors in bright light. It requires high humidity or it will drop its needlelike foliage and it likes to be rootbound so don't repot it until it really needs it. For best acclimation from outdoors to in, take it inside before nighttime temperatures drop to 50F. Place it in a bright location out of direct sunshine and keep it well watered. You can set the pot on a pebble filled tray of water to increase humidity, and you can mist the plant on a daily basis to help keep it happy indoors. Best wishes with your ponytail fern! |
