Rhubarb like mostly sunny conditions (some afternoon shade in really hot locations), and deep, rich soil that is well-drained. Your plants need ample water while they're actively growing, but will get along with what nature provides in the fall and winter months. When you divide your rhubarb plants, amend the soil with some organic matter like compost or aged manure to help it retain moisture and nutrients. Then plant root divisions that contain at least one bud at the crown of the plant. Harvesting will encourage new stalks to grow. When you harvest, don't cut the stalks down, but pull them from the plant. When given the proper cultural conditions, your rhubarb will grow to become spectacular plants.
