I just planted a Wine and ROses Weigela from Monrovia about 5 weeks ago (Late May). Since we planted it the leaves closest to the ground are truning black (burnt around the edges) and then falling off. So it is balding at the bottom. NEw growth is coming in from the top of the branches and they seem to be fine. But it seems this is slowly creeping up the plant to take it over. I have other Weigela's about 20 feet away and they are fine. I also have arbortitae's and other plants near this weigela that are fine. Can you help explain what is going on?

thanks

I don't know whether you're dealing with transplant stress or if a fungal disease is trying to take hold of your weigela. I'd recommend pruning off the affected foliage (then bag a few leaves up and take it to your local Cooperative Extension office, Master Gardener Clinic, or favorite nursery and ask their advice). It's much easier to diagnose a plant problem when you can see it first-hand! Best wishes with your landscape!
