How do I deadhead butterfly bush - Knowledgebase Question

I just purchased one of your Black Knight butterfly bushes. Is it necessary to deadhead the spent blooms? If so, how is it done? How far down on the stem do you cut? How quickly will I see more blooms after deadheading? Thanks for your help.

You may deadhead butterfly bush if you like. You can cut each bloom off one by one, or when the majority of blooms have faded you can lightly shear the plant to remove them. If you look carefully at a bloom stem, you will see that there are smaller flower buds just below the large one to each side of it. If you cut at the base of the large bloom and avoid damaging the small side buds, they will also open. Once your plant grows larger, it can be impractical to deadhead each individual flower so most people shear them. Enjoy your butterfly bush!
