|I would like to have color year round in my back yard. Could you suggest plants that would do well in my area? Also how do I know where to place plants, and what to amend my soil with? The area is four feet wide by thirty feet long. It is the south and west wall of my back yard.
|I've found a terrific source for you for planning your garden! Go to www.monrovia.com and under "Hot Topics" you'll find a link to "Theme Gardens". There are lots to choose from and when you click on one of the images you'll get a plant list and a schematic drawing so you'll know just how to place the plants. You can print these out and choose the best plants from each design to create your own personal design.
Before planting, amend your soil with organic matter (compost, aged-manure, etc.). The easiest way to accomplish this is to spread 4-5" of organic matter over the entire bed and then dig it in to a depth of 8-10". Level the area, then dig holes for the plants. After planting you can spread an additional 3-4" of organic matter over the bare soil to help slow water evaporation and to help suppress weeds.
Enjoy your new flower bed!
