|I purchase 4 clematis vines 5 years ago, all of them having been blooming nicely every spring, this summer one of them died. It was daily watered and the roots were protected with mulch. Can you tell me possible causes for this plant to die. Thank you.

|Based on your description I am not certain what happened. Sometimes this plant is affected by a disease called clematis wilt, which causes it to suddenly wilt and seem to die just as it blooms. If this happens, there is a chance it will come back next year from the roots. Occasionally there can be root damage by voles, or some other physical damage that kills a clematis. Another possibility might be accidental herbicide exposure. Sometimes it takes some detective work to figure out why a plant has died. I'm sorry about your clematis.
