I have a fig tree that I would like to take cuttings from. When is the best time to do this? What is the best method to propagate it, a cutting in sandy soil or air layering? The tree is full of fruit right now (mid August).

The best time is late winter prior to the emergence of new leaves. You can do air layering now quite successfully. Put an air layer on a branch about a foot from the end and pull any fruit off of that particular branch.
