| I think you are asking about the perennial plant Hosta (sometimes also called plantain lily or funkia.) This plant can be transplanted quite easily, yes. It can also be divided if you wish to increase the number of plants. The best time to do move it (and/or divide) would be in September as soon as the weather begins to cool down, or in very early spring just as the plant begins to grow again for the season. To move it, water it deeply the day before, dig it up with as much of the root system as possible and replant at the same depth as it grew before. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch with several inches of organic mulch. Keep the soil evenly moist until it re-establishes. If you want to divide it at the same time, use a sharp spade or knife to cut the plant vertically into sections. Each piece should have roots that correspond to the top growth. A piece four inches across will make a nice plant in a year or two, larger divisions will make a larger plant faster. Replant as above. |
