| I bought a beautiful Fuchsia this year and have had a wonderful season with it. I hate to see it die in the winter. Since I live in the midwest, we get cold winters. Can I bring it in the house over the winter? If so, how would I go about wintering it? Thank you, Kathryn |
| Fuchsia's don't winter over very well indoors, but you may certainly try. I have good success overwintering my fuchsias by keeping them indoors in a bright area that remains above freezing, allowing the soil to dry out and the plants to go into dormancy. In the spring, when the days get longer and the temperatures hover around 40F outdoors, I begin watering my fuchsias. In a few weeks they leaf out and I gradually acclimate them to growing outdoors again. If you decide to do this, keep the plant outdoors until nighttime temperatures are about 45F. Stop watering when the foliage wilts and begins to fall. Pull off all the leaves but don't prune the plant (which will encourage new growth). Set it in a garage or potting shed where there is bright light and the temperatures remain above freezing. Don't water the plants until spring. Best wishes with your fuchsia! |
