SUBJECT: Strawberry Lemonade Variegated Mandevilla I have a north-northwest facing patio fence (5ft high) and I would like to put up a trellis and plant a flowering vine on the N-NW side. The site gets noon-to-afternoon partial (filtered) sun. Can you tell me if the new Strawberry-Lemon-Variegated-Mandevilla would be likely to grow and produce flowers in a location like this? Our location is faily temperate, in Cupertino, CA, nearby to the south end of SF-Bay with warm (no or little frost days) weather. I would guess our 'Zone' to be a 9. If it might be a good candidate, where would this variant be available? Thanks for your help, Denis |
Strawberry variegated mandevilla is hardy only in the mildest regions of California (zones 10 and 11) so it would be marginal in your garden. If you can grow tropical hibiscus, bird of paradise and gardenia without problem, you can grow mandevilla. It is hardy only to about 40F. The tops will die down at temperatures below that, but the roots should remain alive and new shoots will develop in the spring. With that caution in mind, here's a list of nurseries in your area that are likely to carry the plant: SUMMERWINDS NURSERY #59 1491 S. DE ANZA BLVD.
