Clematis are very winter hardy, cold tolerant plants. Mulch around the base of the plant and cover the root area with about three inches of organic mulch in a flat layer. Do not let it touch the stems, keep it an inch or two away. That is all you need to do for winter protection.

There are many types of clematis. How and when to prune depends on what specific type you have. But only one type of clematis would be cut back in late fall (or very early spring): the fall blooming or sweet autumn clematis. This is a fall bloomer with small, fragrant white flowers. The rest are pruned in spring or summer.

You may find the following general care and pruning directions helpful in deciding how to prune your particular vine. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

Enjoy your clematis!
