I am trying to start some mimosa trees from seed. I have a couple started and they are in my sun kitchen window(about 2 in. tall). How much water should I give them and is it good to cover them w/a plastic bottle to make a greenhouse effect? I have been doing that at night but I just lost one.It dried up and died. I water often. Thank you for any info.

Now that the seeds have germinated, you won't need to cover the plants for a greenhouse effect. High humidity can encourage a fungal disease called "damping off" which causes seedlings to wilt, even though they are getting adequate water. Don't cover your seedlings, but space them far enough apart that there's good air circulation all around. You can water them when the top of the potting soil dries out. Keeping them too moist will cause root rot. Try to water from the bottom (place the pots on a tray and put water in the tray). When the water moves up to the top of the soil, you'll see a change in the color of the potting soil. At that time dump the excess water from the tray and don't water again until the top of the soil dries out (changes color and begins to pull away from the edges of the pot). Best wishes with your new mimosa trees!
