How to care for Mums - Knowledgebase Question

A friend gave me a pot of mums. I don't want to plant it outside for we are moving next year so how can I care for it in a pot. It does not get below freezing to much in Biloxi and when it does I bring plants in the garage. I understand that they like to be in the sun and kept moist not soggy. Thanks I am so glad that you are there when I need you. Julia

I can understand why you want to keep your chrysanthemum in its pot. My suggestion is to enjoy it on your deck or patio until it stops flowering. At that time, don't move it into the garage, but bury the pot in a garden bed for the winter. Next spring you can unearth the pot and enjoy your mums for another year.

After they finish flowering, garden mums should be cut back about one-quarter their height. In late January or early February cut them back to about 3 inches from the ground. New growth usually begins in February or March ? when new shoots appear at the base of the old stem stubs.

Best wishes with your new plant!
