Do canna tubers need to be removed from the soil in winter months here in the hills of Los Gatos, CA (zone 8B)? We get several days of sub-freezing in the winter. Is it necessary to go through the trouble of digging them up and storing? |
In your mild climate all you'll need to do is wait for frost to kill the tops of the plants then cut away the dead foliage and cover the bed with 2-3 inches of organic mulch (to help protect the rhizomes and to maintain soil moisture). In the spring new shoots will develop and you can move away the organic mulch. Enjoy your cannas! |
