| Purchased (from Briggs Nursery) & planted 6 of these great looking shrubs this fall, that are doing well. They are 1-1/2 to 2 feet tall. This will be 1st winter for these young plants. The are planted on the south side, but get alot of wind exposure. We often get heavy wet snow (8-10 miles from Atlantic ocean) and I worry about the branches bending & breaking from heavy snow and wind. | These plants are considered winter hardy into zone 6, and your zip code places you in zone 6A or the coldest part of zone 6. Depending on the microclimate where they are planted, it may be as cold as zone 5. I would suggest a generous mulch over the root area in late fall, and you will definitely want to give them wind protection or they may not survive. The A frames are made of wooden boards and can be as elaborate or as simple as you care to make them. Since these are still small the teepee idea could work. I would fill the center around the plants with dry oak leaves or dry straw stuffed into the burlap to provide some additional protection. Then top that with plastic sheeting to keep it dry, but leave gaps in the plastic to allow for air flow and prevent condensation inside on sunny days. Snow is actually a great insulator, so a good thing in this case. Good luck with your shrubs! |
