I have lots of challenges in my landscaping. There is very serious clay just 6 inches below the surface. I have tried building up beds and now I going to try compost. I don't know if that is the problem with my Rose of Sharon though. It's about 12 feet tall and looks very healthy. However, it never blooms. It make tons of buds, so many I have to trim them off for fear it is stressing out the tree. But the buds never open. They just turn yellow and fall off. Any idea what could be causeing this. The tree has been in my yard for 6 years and has always behaved this way. I've tried everything I can think of....

If your plant looks otherwise healthy, the bud drop could be caused by gall midge. Place some buds in a sealable plastic bag. After a day or two, you may see the very small yellowish worm-like larva on the plastic. Control the midge affecting buds with Orthene sprays as recommended on the label. Hope this helps.
