I have a several palm trees in my yard that are 8-10 ft tall. A few months ago the tops of 2 of them just dropped off. The whole green leafy portion broke off right at the top of the bark. (if it's even called bark on a palm tree) These trees are not located anywhere close to each other and the trees closest to them seem to be fine. What happened and how can I fix these? |
Anne, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. A palm that loses its top or terminal bud can't resprout and will die. What caused this is difficult to say. You'd have to examine the broken area for signs of something boring into it or some type of rot. I would also suggest you contact your County Extension Office as they offer free assistance and will likely be more aware of local factors that may have caused this. Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon! |
