Cutting Back Roses - Knowledgebase Question

I just bought a house that has roses over growing everywhere. When and how should I cut them back? I live in central Louisiana. Some of the Roses are climbing on trellises.

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Cut back roses by about half if they are overgrowing and then you can do maintenance trimming to manage the regrowth. Do this now through late winter. Once bloomers which includes most climbers should be pruned after they bloom. The following web site offers more info on pruning various types of roses:
