zone 6 just planted boxwood and hollies on jan 15th,what do i do about watering them. thank you |
Broadleaf evergreens are susceptible to winter drying because they hold their foliage. It is important to water as needed to keep the soil moist any time it is not frozen. The weather has been so unusual this year, you will need to check the soil often. Use your finger to feel the soil and see if you need to water. It should be damp, not soaking wet or saturated. Overwatering would be potentially damaging to the roots, so do not water unnecessarily. These shrubs will also benefit from wind protection this first winter. You may want to erect a burlap screen to provide a wind break if they are planted in a windy location. Good luck with your evergreens! |
