I would suggest you begin by running some basic soil tests. Adjust the pH if needed and work on adding organic matter through core aeration and top dressing with compost. Mowing frequently so that no more than one third of the lawn height is cut off each time you mow can be a big step toward improving the turf grass. Your local county extension should be able to help you with the testing and interpreting the results as well as in developing a lawn care and maintenance program that is suited to your local climate, the soil in your yard, and the specific grasses you have growing in your lawn. Good luck with your new home and lawn!
