I had my trees trimmed recently, and my backyard will finally get some sun. My Fescue is spotty. What would be a good lawn seed to sow, and when?

I'd overseed with fescue or with perennial ryegrass. Both grow well in your region and the ryegrass will tolerate more shade than the fescue. When reseeding, be sure to rake out the old, dead grass and scratch the earth so the seeds make good contact with the soil. To help keep the seedbed moist, cover with a thin layer of peat moss after broadcasting the seeds. Keep the reseeded areas moist (water as often as necessary). Best wishes with your lawn!
