I have monkey grass as a border around a well- established flower bed. Bermuda is over-running the monkey grass. The monkey grass is approximately 1 foot thick making it impossible to pull the bermuda out. Any suggestions?

Mrs. Gardener,

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you.

There is not a great option for killing the bermuda but not damaging the mondo or monkeygrass. The grass control products Fusilade II (fluazifop) and Ornamec (sethoxydim) are labeled for use in ornamental beds but with the warming that with some ornamentals including mondo up to 20% phytotoxicity can occur. You'll have to decide if this is acceptable and then try to as best you can direct the spray to the bermuda and minimize contact with the mondo. Applying it to bermuda on both sides of the mondo will help a lot as it will tend to kill the bermuda back from the point of spray contact so some degree.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon!
