What ways are there to repair dead patches in the lawn apart from plugs?

I'm not sure I understand your question. If a part of the lawn is dead and there is living grass within about a foot of it and the cause of the dieback (disease, insect, foot traffic or drought) has been controlled or alleviated, then with proper care it will fill back in on its own in a growing season. Areas larger than about a foot in size need plugs or strips of sod planted in them for faster restoration of a solid turf cover.
