A healthy lawn is based on regular care and maintenance. First off I would suggest you run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. Use the test results to determine if you need to fertilize or add lime. Then mow frequently. Never remove more than one third the grass height at a time. In spring, you may need to mow more than once a week. Your local county extension may have additional suggestions on developing a maintenance program based on your local soil and weather conditions.

Weeding a flower bed usually takes several approaches. First, hand pull or dig out weeds including the roots, or treat the area with an herbicide containing glyphosate. (Read and follow the label directions.) Then apply a layer of mulch two to three inches thick over the soil. This should prevent new weed seedlings from sprouting up. If weeds do appear, you can continue to hand pull or you can spot treat with glyphosate. Glyphosate will kill all plants, not just weeds, so you may find you have more control using a wipe on application system rather than spraying.

I hope this helps.
