If you have already prepared the seedbed, you could use a special starter fertilizer formulated specifically for use at the same time as seeding. If you have not yet prepared the soil for seeding you can work regular fertilizer into the soil before you plant the seed. Read and follow the label directions.

You might want to run some basic soil tests and check the fertility levels so you know better how much fertilizer to use and whether or not you need to lime to adjust the pH as well. It is better to work in the lime to get it a few inches into the soil ahead of planting than apply it later because lime is slow moving through the soil. Your local county extension should be able to help you with testing and interpreting the results.
