I planted watermelon plants in an area that is under full sun for most part of day. They gave fruits quickly but they never seemed to mature to full size. They cracked open and spoiled. What is causing this?

Watermelons need full sun and a rich, evenly moist soil. There are different varieties of watermelon and some are much smaller than others when the fruit is mature. If you grew one of the smaller types then they may have been left on the vine too long. Check the days to maturity on the seed package to know roughly how long to expect it to take. Also, the plants should have steady soil moisture, damp like a wrung out sponge. If the soil is dry and then suddenly very wet, the melons may crack due to absorbing sudden excess water.
