I plan on renting an aerator. My grass is patchy and I have weeds and a lot of little black ants. Would aerating help the grass?

If the lawn has had a lot of foot traffic over the years and the soil is compacted, aerating will help. Another way to grow a healthy lawn is to put your lawn on a regular feeding and watering schedule. Lush, thick lawn will crowd out weeds and regular watering will discourage ants from nesting there. I'd treat first for weeds. Once they're gone, rake bare areas and areas where grass is thin and then overseed the entire lawn. Grass seed germinates in only 7-10 days. You'll need to keep your lawn moist during this period. Once the new grass is about 3" high you can mow and then broadcast fertilizer. We recommend you fertilize 4 times a year (April, June, September and November) with a 3-1-2 ratio of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Water deeply once or twice a week (depending upon weather) and in a few months you'll have a healthy, happy lawn.
