After the winter, my wife trimmed our tree in late march, leaving no leaves on it at all. Nothing new has grown out yet. Is it o.k.? How long does it take for new leaves to start growing?

This tree is VERY forgiving so don't worry about excessive pruning. In fact, you can cut it back to fence posts and start over, and it will grow beautifully. African sumac grows best when the weather is warm, so give your plant a chance to notice the changing of the seasons. When both the soil and the air temperatures are just right, your Rhus will begin to grow. As an added bonus, Rhus lancea is also fire retardant and drought resistant. Happy gardening!
