Suckering Lilacs - Knowledgebase Question

I have 4 lilac shrubs that are suckering like crazy, the previous owner of the house not only did no yard work but watered everything to death. I would assume that watering them less would help them not sucker as much, but....do you have any other suggestions on what to do to keep them from suckering?

Lilacs are beautiful when in bloom, but they send up suckers naturally and prolifically, as you have discovered. You may prune them out or mow them down close to the ground or dig them up and give them to lilac-less friends. I wouldn't dig too deeply into the roots; it will just invite diseases and infections. Lilacs are very tough and don't need a lot of root to transplant succesfully.
