can you tell me when i can trim a orange tree and a grape fruit tree? thank you |
Actually, it's not recommended to prune citrus branches unless they are dead, weak, diseased, crossing, etc. Citrus tree bark is susceptible to sunburn, which causes it to crack and open holes for pests and diseases. Removing limbs leaves bare spots, open to sun. Orchard growers allow all the low limbs to stay on the tree, right to the ground. The fruit is easier to pick, also! If you do prune, do so lightly, now in early spring, so the tree has a chance to recover that lost photosynthesizing capability before summer. Don't prune in summer--it's too hot. Cover any exposed trunk tissue with white latex paint designed for this purpose, which protects it from sunburn. Good luck! |
