I'm looking for a herbicide that will kill the Chives that have spread throughout a small flower garden (they have even spread into my brick paver patio). I'm okay with loosing the perennials that are there, but, will the soil be affected for same season planting?

Chives and onions and garlic are all closely related and difficult to control in the garden. If you pull them out, you must dig them up and take care to remove all the baby bulbs alongside the main bulb. If you don't, you will have even more than when you began. These can also spread by seeding, so make sure to remove any flowers that may form before they can seed themselves about. One method you could try is to cut off the foliage and then wipe the cut end with herbicide containing glyphosate. It sometimes takes two treatments but this would allow you to save your flowers. On the patio, you could use the spray application method. (You could also spray the flower bed but this is a contact herbicide and nonselective so it would kill your flowers as well.) Read and carefully follow all of the label directions. Good luck!
