I just bought a small avocado tree. How do I care for it? Do they grow well in the Phoenix area?

Avocado trees do not perform well here. They thrive in San Diego, but we are hotter and drier than they like, and our salty, alkaline soil is a challenge. However, it is my understanding that there are a handful in the Valley that do okay in specific microclimates. I'm going to put you in touch with the Arizona chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. They are compiling a census of which unusual fruits grow where. They love to talk gardening and will be delighted to give you the benefit of any experiences they have with avocado growing. They meet at Maricopa County Cooperative Extension, where they also maintain a subtropical fruit demonstration garden. At their website you can join a forum or ask specific questions. If you click on Articles, there is one on avocado. http://www.azrfg.com/ Good luck!
