Ants in Humus pile.. - Knowledgebase Question

Recently I used a mechanical shreader to chew up limbs, twigs, leaves, etc. The shreader did an excellent job, taking a large stack of organic material and reducing them to a several cubic yards of humus.

About two weeks later, I noticed thousands of small read ants. Are these insects benificial to the humas activity, or should they be removed. Would pesticide be ill advised?

Regards,

Dick

Dick,

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you.

I wouldn't worry about small ants in the piles. Nature loves to come to a compost party!

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
