| What you describe sounds like wild onion or wild garlic. These can be difficult to eradicate because of the bulbous root, which stores energy for the plant. So, if you cut off the tops rather than digging and completely removing the bulb and roots, the plants will simply regenerate a new top. They can be controlled, but it will take persistence. Broadleaf herbicides containing 2, 4-D, such as Trimec Southern or Bayer Advanced Southern Weed Killer, will provide control of wild garlic and wild onion with repeat applications. Glyphosate, the nonselective herbicide found in Roundup, Eraser and similar products, will also provide control of wild garlic and wild onion. However, they are vegetation killers and will kill any plant they come in contact with. For that reason, be careful when applying, making sure you treat only the targeted weeds.
