I was planning on using mini alberta spruce to plant in pots to put on either side of the entrance to our house. This area is a coverd stoop and does not get any direct sun. I noticed that the tags on Albertas say

Spruces do need at least a half a day of direct sun, preferably morning sun if they are in containers like this. So, this is probably not the best choice for you. You could try boxwoods or yews clipped to shape, or a topiary English ivy trained on a frame, although these may or may not survive the winter in containers outdoors. (The roots are just not well insulated in a container.)
