The first thing to do is try to identify the rose. If it is a multiflora rose, then it would be considered an invasive plant and you might want to eradicate it. But if it is an old fashioned climber or shrub rose that has become overgrown, then that would require some careful pruning to bring it back to its best.

I would wait and see what type of flowers it produces and work from there. If it is an old fashioned rose, a hard pruning into old canes could kill it. Instead, right after it blooms, begin to thin some of the wildest growth. Over the next year or two you will be able to bring it into a semblance of shape by pruning right after it blooms.
