One of the best mulches for roses is bark. Whether it is cedar, pine, hemlock, etc., bark mulch allows for air and water penetration, but stops weeds from growing. Roses are moisture sensitive so mulch is especially helpful in retaining soil moisture.

Best wishes with your roses!
