The most important thing with irrigation systems is to install multiple valves for different types of plants. In other words, a valve for lawn area, a valve for trees, a valve for annuals, etc. People tend to skimp on this, but it is cheaper in the long run because watering properly is the best thing we can do to grow healthy plants that don't die and need replacement! There is a free guide on irrigation systems put out by Arizona Municipal Water User's Association. Call your city water dept. to see if they have it available. Recommendations vary, but it's good to keep plants that need frequent watering (like grass) at least 6 to 10 feet away from the house foundation.
