Ficus benjamina or a fig tree will grow best in bright light. Sadly, in too much shade it will not thrive at all. It is tolerant of a range of room temperatures and does quite well outdoors in the summer -- the humidity is great for it. However, it does need to be indoors in a heated area during the colder months in New Jersey's climate. If you are not able to provide the type of conditions a fig tree would need, you could consider using an imitation ficus tree. There are some newer "silk" foliage plants that look very realistic and are trouble free, just an occasional dusting.
