Some gardeners report that certain herbs such as rue or lavender will deter cats, and there is the Coleus canina that is said to repel cats if planted around the perimeter of the garden. You can also use the repellent sprays or granules labeled for cats, or try sprinkling the area with thorny clippings to make walking uncomfortable for the cats. Sometimes changing your mulch material will help, too.
