how do you take care of abortvities each year, they look a little brown |
Arborvitaes are very low maintenance shrubs once established. Certain varieties typically brown during the winter, it is termed bronzing, and then turn green again as the spring progresses. You will also normally see some browning and dropping at the interior of the plant each fall. General care would include a year round mulch. Use an organic mulch applied in a flat layer about three inches thick over the root area. You can also top dress once a year with a good quality compost. If it is adjacent to a lawn that is fertilized, you would not need to fertilize the arborvitae in addition to that. If it is a young planting, you might use an all purpose granular or slow release granular fertilizer with an analysis of 10-10-10 per the label directions each spring. Water deeply in times of extended drought. Enjoy! |
