|Preparing to lay sod is similar to preparing to seed, only the final step is different. First run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. This will tell you how much fertilizer and lime you need to work into the soil along with adding organic matter. Work these into the top six inches or so of soil. Then level and rake smooth prior to laying the sod. The soil preparation process is critical to your success with the (expensive) sod so do not be tempted to skimp on it. Your local county extension should be able to help you with the soil tests and interpreting the results, as well as discuss the best local sources of organic matter such as compost, and also suggest the best varieties of grass for your growing conditions in your yard. Good luck with your lawn this summer!
