|This can be a problem especially in spring when they are looking for nesting sites. You might be able to deter them by stringing a few strands of fishing line through the tops of the plants and across the supports for the basket in a sort of spider web style. This serves to confuse their depth perception. Otherwise, you may need to try to cage the plant temporariy in wire mesh.
