According to the University of Wyoming, bluegrass is the variety of choice for your gardening region. The fine fescues ? sheep, chewings, hard and red ? are good substitutes for bluegrass, providing comparable turf quality with half the watering and mowing. Fine fescues, particularly red fescue, are more shade tolerant than bluegrass. Bluegrass tolerates the most foot traffic, so that's the seed of choice.
