I have heard that adding coffee grounds, vitamins, and even birth control pills could make houseplants healthier and greener. True ?

I'll vote for coffee grounds as a source of nutrients for houseplants, but vitamins and birth control pills are a bit far-fetched. While there are miniscule amounts of elements in the vitamins and birth control pills that might be absorbed by the plant roots, I'm not sure they'd be in quantities large enough to be beneficial - or detrimental. Coffee grounds will acidify the soil, though, so make sure the plant is an acid lover - like an azalea. Why not stick with fertilizers formulated for houseplant use rather than trying just any thing that's rumored to be good?
